The Society was formed in early 1983 and approved by the IRS as 501(c)(3) for charitable tax purposes and by the Virginia State Corporation Commission. ​



The Saint Andrew's Society of Tidewater is organized to provide assistance to those of Scottish heritage; to encourage and promote the study of the history, tradition, and culture of Scotland, and the influence of immigrant Scots in the development of the United States; to promote, foster, undertake, and encourage research, education, scholarship and the dissemination of information concerning the the history of Scots and their traditions and culture, to perpetuate Scottish traditions and culture, and to promote activities among its members. ​
